Ye Olde Kitchen

I think I pretty much had my style down in the kitchen of my last house.  We started with a most disgusting place, but slowly transformed it.....on the cheap.  And we did it over a period of 2 years.

The bummer is that I didn't do a decorating blog back then (I was too busy doing a spirituality/homelife blog), and didn't get any pictures of the finished product or even pics of the work that went into it.

However, going thru my old photos, I found some random shots that might help you visualize how adorable-y cottage-y it was.  You'll need to imagine there are no goofy teenagers, k?

Here's where we started: indoor/outdoor carpet, wallpaper, etc.  Puke.
Are ya feeling it?  The counters were actually kinda cool...a pale green with paisleys that I would've kept if it hadn't been in really BAD condition.  No, the bleach didn't help.

The nook, with it's plastic beadboard and hunter green vertical blinds.  Yeah.

So get ready for the afters...  May I introduce you to Abby my finished product!  Basically painted the lower cabs deep taupe, upper cabs white, walls sage green with white beadboard. Oh, and new hardware.

Here we see my desk area opposite of the shot above.  We don't see two sophomores dressed like streetwalkers for semi-formal.

This is looking into the nook area, which we made our mudroom....though we did put a couple fold-down tables on the back of the peninsula for overflow kid-type-guests.  This isn't a picture of my graduating (now married) daughter peeking out.

This would be looking across the nook from outside to my adorable laundry area.  See the wee iron brackets?  Right there, behind the non-smooching twin.  You'll just have to believe me, it was adorable. No, not the kiss.

Open pantry door, open laundry room closet door, but man....look at that beadboard and the crystal knobs would ya?

You can just see the coat rack hubs made for the mudroom beyond those bubbles *pop*

Mkay...see my cute dishes? And how 'bout that nifty faucet and pseudo-farm sink, eh?

How about some grainy, blue-ish shots from the realtor brochure when we put the house on the market?

You can see the IKEA fold down tables in this one.

As you can imagine, I'm pretty irritated that the room we worked the hardest on has no beauty shots.  I'll send out a call to family members....perhaps they caught her in her glory?

I'll show some other before and afters of our last house later in the week.  I actually have some decent shots of other rooms, go figure.

How about you?  Do any major renos and either forgot to take pics or didn't think about it because it was pre-blogging days? Okaybye.

I can get a good picture of how wonderful it must have been! I know, it's hard to leave a place you've worked so hard on to fix up. I can't wait to tackle my OWN house after living in rentals for the past 8 years. (some day...some day...)

I did the exact same thing and totally forgot to take before pictures. Hubs and I redid my 1950 kitchen on the cheap also. I love vintage style, so it easy to do with thrift store finds and repurposing found items. The only thing that I really spent any money on was the granite countertops. Due to the current economy, I got them for a very good price. Here is the link to my kitchen.

If I only had a digital camera on my hands back then. I would have taken loads of before and afters.

yep, i did that with our first house. the kitchen was the most drastic change and i don't have one photo of the before. i do have plenty of the after.
we are in our second home now, which was a new build, but have just placed it on the market. we are looking across town at older homes - all with dark cabs and dark panelling, etc. - so your photos have been the perfect motivation for me.

No major redos here in last couple of years, but lots of small things that I completely forgot to photograph the before and/or afters. You would think as long as I have been blogging, I would know better. :)
Hope you are having a great week.

Great job! Painting those cabinets did wonders. I'm trying to convince a dear friend to do the same. I'll be showing her this! :)

Love that painted cabinets, a client just asked me today about painting cabinets... I'll have to send them to your site! and the pictures I seem to have trouble capturing are the "before" and "after" it's too late!

I love the height of the wainscoting! What a transformation you did. Luv painted cabinets, especially when the uppers and lowers are not matching. Nice work! I hope you find some beauty shots to share.

Only like my whole house! Took very few photos of before and afters. Of course, kicking myself now, but when you are in the trenches of a big reno, for me anyway, I didn't think about photos at the end of the day, I thought about the shower and the bed.....what I love about this post is all the goofy kids in the pictures. It's a great testimony of the LIFE that is in your life. :-) Rock on with your badself. Love the new header.

I would have to agree. The old kitchen was the best.

Yes, I did it with past projects in other homes. I wanted to memory of how ugly things were. Then it occurred to me how useful it would be to remind me how much I'd done! Live and learn.
I love all you did to your other home. You have a great eye and unique refreshing style.

correction: I wanted NO memory of how ugly things were.

thanks for commenting on my post about my kitchen and featuring it! (Do you have a button for those of us who were lucky to have gained this status? :P)I am definitely very happy with it --- I took enough pics of the "after", I just wish I took more of the actual reno process. So I can better appreciate the amount of work I (um, my husband) did! :)

Love the kitchen! It looks like everyone else loved it too! I wish I had pics of even this house before. The kitchen was pea green and rust, the bath was gray green, the upstairs girls room was green with big scary goofy animals drawn all over in sharpie and the boys room was mauve. All total yuck! Our room was just primer. I kick myself now that I hadn't taken before and after pics of things even in the old house, I had done.

LOL! I actually love the fact that the kiddos are all over the map. :)

I've done many redos over the years that are so not documented. I too remember one past kitchen I was soooo proud of. Painted the cabs antique white, added new countertops, it turned out beautiful. And then I moved. :)

But luckily, I did start a (different) blog when my current house started being worked on. I didn't even know what a blog was on day one. I learned fast.
