Christmas Craft: Chenille Poinsettia Garland Tutorial

PSSSST...I'm no longer blogging here!
You can now find me at

-----------------------------------------------------------------

Well, alrighty, it's time for Kate @ Centsational Girl's Christmas Craft Party, and it's CSI's Handmade Holiday Challenge, so I made me a garland.
And I made you a tutorial at the end.  You're welcome.
I think it looks just about perfect on my hutch.
LOVE me some blue and brown (sand and sea)...

...with a bit of iridescence and shine for the holly-days of course.

I think it looks kinda vintage-y.  And yummy.

Although it may be painfully obvious how I made the poinsettias, I did up a tute anyway.
Here's what you'll need to make the petal pairs (finished pair shown):

Between the first two 'lumps', bend the wire like this:

Then pull the end down to meet the other end to make a petal.
Twist the end around to hold:

Repeat for the other side,  then bend the pair into a 'V':

After you've made 3 pairs of petals, punch out a circle out of construction paper:

Fire up that glue gun and put a glob in the middle of the circle:

Then start stickin' your petal pairs on:
 #1

#2

#3!

Then put another blob of glue in the middle and stick your flat marble on:

Once it dries, I go around and pinch the ends tight while pushing toward the center a bit.
This helps bow out the sides to make the petals nice and fat:

Lastly, trim the paper circle on the back so it won't show from the front:

And there ya go.
You can use these as ornaments,
hanging on a lampshade like they used to in the 40's,
or in a garland like I did (the marble makes them heavy, so beware
...I had to anchor mine on top of the hutch with fishing wire and thumbtacks.)

I also made some red ones with styrofoam balls I (surprise) glitterfied:

I hot glued the white ones with some Dollar store snowflake ornaments
on an iridescent blue ribbon for my garland.

Pretty! Pretty Easy!

Let me know if you give this crafty-craft a try.  So many color possibilities for holidays and special occasions.

You asked where I got my white tree. Of all places, I got it at the Dollar Store for $20.00.

Hi Cindy-

So pretty, clever, crafty, and Christmasy - you can do so many things with them. I don't know which one I like better- the red or the white.

My best- Diane

I'm curious where you found a pack of *just* white chenille sticks, if you did. I could only find a multi pack with one lonely white one chenille stick among brights colors. Thanks!!

What darling little poinsettas! I love them. They look great on your beautful hutch... And the color scheme??? It's just awesome! Where in the world did you find the blue silk poinsettas that are scattered throughout the hutch? They, too, are gorgeous & would look great on my tree. I'm thinking of trying some of the white chenille ones for my tree, too. Thanks for a great tutorial & an awesome blog!

Just the right amount of bling for a cozy vintage look, Cindy! The poinsettias are so pretty. Love the color scheme, too. The blue fleurs are gorgeous. Where DID you find them? ~ Sue

Think I'll give these a go -only with vintage button centers, or maybe even three layers with crepe in the middle. See? you've inspired me!

Great tutorial. sometimes we need a visual to inspire us to do just a simple thing too.

Thanks!
