Anyway, thought I'd reveal my sordid history with trying to make my own. First, let's see my mama's handiwork again:
This fine specimen was my first attempt. I used a sheet. I sewed tons of pillow covers. I went a bit overboard with the yellow floral....even made a cushion on the rattan chair. You didn't notice that the stripes didn't match up. Nope. Didn't happen.
I even sewed a matching chair and ottoman cover with peach sheets....and more of that Waites floral in miniature size. Loved me some Raymond Waites. I guess.
Evenutally, I buckled down and made a real slipcover for that couch in some brushed twill from Walmart. First incarnation. The green chair just off the right side of the photo was the second try at the chair in the peach above.
Dyed said slipcover blue to match my Shabby Chic phase. You didn't notice the pillows didn't have covers made yet.
Third incarnation, chocolate brown with Ralph Lauren shams I sewed up. Prolly my favorite version. Of course this is the only shot I have of it. You didn't see my dd drinking her latte. Or the way the arm on the slipcover reveals that I didn't know what the heck I was doing.
Same chair as above behind dd, but I made real cushion covers and a wee pillow.
Not sure this counts, but I made those ruffly cases (and the shams, duvet and valance) for my bedroom recently.
A cushion cover with ruffle. She looks much better than with the off-center stripes you didn't see before.
Taupe stripe dining chair covers.
Evenutally put them on these chairs to match the skirted hutch.
Dropcloth cushion cover, skirt, pillow shams. This was my first foray with adding piping and a zipper to a weird shaped cushion.
New shams to match the skirt above.
I will be trying my hand at a sofa and loveseat in the near future. Can't decide between khaki twill or straight washed denim. Should be oooooodles of fun.

Oh, you are brave. I have a sectional over here that could use a little slip cover love. My dog, in a fit of senility, thought he was diggin for gold right there in the middle of the couch... I 'repaired' the damage, turned the cushions over.. And he did it again. UGH! I am thinking drop cloth slip cover... I don't know what I'm doing though, and I get uber frustrated sewing....
Brave! I have got to bite the bullet and work on slipcovers. The drop cloth with piping is Gorgeous! I think you should keep typing away, as long as I am reading I'm not cleaning:-) Bella

I am so scared to try to make slipcovers and now you've scared me even more. Can I just send you the measurements and you can make them for me? The chairs and skirted hutch look great. I can't wait to see what you decide for the sofa and love seat.
You have done great! I havent attempted to make slip covers yet, although have been thinking of them for my kitchen chairs....
It is fun to see your progress on these slip covers. You really are getting better at it with each try. And can I just compliment you on your tenacity! I am happy if I have done one slipcover but you just keep doing them!

Hmm, should we be expecting another post soon? You didn't use your closing line..."okay bye". Tired of you? Never! It's like winning the lottery when you post more than once a day! I've already commented when you showed your mother's home, that I adore her dining room chair slip covers. Yours are great as well. I admire that you even attempted to do this. I especially like your first attempt at adding piping and a zipper. Kudos to you!

I've got a new guest room from daughter moving out and I need to sew a bedskirt. I've researched but still I'm afraid. I even bought a ruffler for my machine and have yet to get it to work right. Any pointers?

I am very impressed with your determination to improve your skills! I need to do mine and have been too chicken to start. Thanks for reminding me you don't have to be perfect from the start but will get what you want in the end. ^^
Nice to see that you didn't give up and kept perfecting your slips. My favorite is the last one just because I am drawn to ruffles and brown.
You have so much talent! I wish I could sew, in fact it's my goal this year not to only learn how to sew, but to get a sewing machine.

Hi Cindy! I think even your earliest attempts look pretty good! The ones with the ruffle and ticking stripe are so beautiful. Don't you just love sewing? It's so empowering. You see something you like but can't afford, so you just make it! All the sewing in your bedroom looks wonderful too. Love your blog!

Beautiful, Cindy! I honestly didn't notice the little imperfections you pointed out. I think they're all gorgeous. I feel like a total loser now.
