Living Room Revamp

PSSSST...I'm no longer blogging here!
You can now find me at

-----------------------------------------------------------------

Believe it or not, I actually got some decorating done this week.  I know.  I was shocked too.

I painted my living room Laura Ashley's Taupe 4  (same as my dining room), and I think it gives the room more drama.  The mistint I had previously used was ok, but I wanted my seafoams and aquas and florals to pop more.
(Well hello there, Bogart)

Also, took out the oval coffee table....much as I love it, I needed visual space in this room.  Might slipcover an ottoman I have in the garage for some foot propping action, though.  We'll see.  If you're local, I'm selling the coffee table for $75.

I'm learning again that so many of the plans I make for a room will change as I see stuff put together.  I brought down a IKEA desk and shelves from upstairs that match the tall bookcases I already have in this room.  Repainted the shelves heirloom white, and figured I do the same with the matching pieces....but I kinda like the wood tones with the floral and baskets.

Here's the bookshelves....I had previously painted them turquoise and glazed over them with a brown.  Against the lighter wall, they looked fine.

But with the darker wall color, and all the color from the books, I felt white would look less busy.

And finally, I got hubs to hang the beloved chippy shutter:

Been saving those letter envelopes and waiting for inspiration.  They are actually the packaging for galvanized metal letters I got on clearance last year from Restoration Hardware.  While laying in bed the other night, mentally arranging furniture and such for this room, I had an *aha* moment when I realized I could make a simple banner over the shutter.  Here's where I hung it:

Remember my inspiration?

And this?

How'd I do so far?  This is what you see as you enter the room.

I want to add some more things to the walls, but for now, I feel like this room functions the way I need it to, and looks pretty darn close to the 'look' I'm wanting....vintagey, cottagey, browns and aquas with some faded florals.  And a big black dog.

Don't forget Mi4M will go up tonight around 9 eastern time. I'm changing it up a bit, so be sure to read the instructions. They're found in your glove compartment.

I have one of those same Leksvik (sp?) Ikea bookcases in my dining/family room! I haven't painted mine white (I have China White walls) but I love yours! I would really love to see more photos of your room with the desk and bookcases. I'm pondering (incessantly) undoing/redoing my tiny living room as a den-ish sort of room. It's open to the kitchen (pass through window), the front porch (door dumps right into the middle of the room), the hall (and so the bathroom and both bedrooms) and dining/family room (which contains a daybed). I'd pay good money to see your room from different angles...

You made a lot of progress! The white book shelves definitely "pop" and the shutter adds so much character! Great job!

It looks good. I really like the bookshelves painted white. I just finished painting my bedroom the same color last week. Such a great color choice.

The room looks great, and as I said before, I appreciate the ideas because I've got couches the same color. I guess I should do a post on mine.
I love that shutter!

Looks great! The taupe walls are beautiful...I like the softness. I do think you should paint the desk white too. I really like the bookshelves white. And I can't believe you are getting rid of that coffee table.
