::A Cottage Bathoom Redo::

Ok, so like over a year ago I posted about how I was gonna redo my main floor bathroom.

We did actually *mostly* finish it before Robyn Rose (grandbaby extraordinare) joined us in April.

(I'm just not all that sure I can do a post without adding at least ONE pic of her princessness, I do apologize)

Mostly meaning: it was again functional, but not REALLY finished.
Now, it's as finished as it's gonna get.

Here is a psuedo-collage of the hideousness before:

And now, let's peek inside....

Tada.

New hardware purchased at Target.  I sprayed the existing hinges with brushed nickel.

Painted the wee thrift stool the same color as the cabs.

Shower curtain and towels from Marshall's.

Trafficmaster vinyl floor.  Not really happy with this.  The seams are coming up.

Used the existing counter, sink and faucet.

This has become my bathroom now, even though we have a room within our master bedroom that condescends to be a bathroom.
This newly refreshed room is right outside our bedroom door,
so I claimed it.

Let me introduce you to my pretty dang awesome lil' sis Bubs.

I'm kinda jealous of her 'cause she was a gramma before me.

But this is about the wicked cool stencil treatment she did on one of her family room walls.  She doesn't blog, but posted these on her facebook page and I snagged 'em.  That's what big sisters do.  They snag things from younger siblings.

Behold what darkness lies beyond....

...this tacky hollow-core door:

Prepare yourself for horrors unknown...

I know.  It's ok if you need a moment to gather your wits again.  I'll wait.
(tapping foot)
So *that* atrocity, my pretties, is the focus of my next reno.
Not the city.
But you knew that.

There's gonna be some shuffling round here as another birdie will fly the coop in a month or so.
This means I get to glory in my own personal version of traffic jam as a largish bedroom upstairs becomes uninhabited.
I love uninhabited.
The possibilities make me giddy.  Ish.

current 'carnation of room about to be uninhabited--see full post when we surprised her with it HERE

But what does that uninhabited room have to do with the murky underworld of the 80's blue hearts and flowers tragedy downstairs?

I don't know.  Just work with me here.

Oh I remember.
When child #4 moves out, child #5 will take her room leaving *his* room uninhabited (I told ya, just like traffic jam).  I intend to keep that downstairs room *mostly* uninhabited, and reincarnate it into a dreamy guest room and dumping ground for cra(p)ft room overflow from next door.

Sooooo....I've been waiting for the inspiration to tie the guest room and guest bath together now that no one but guests will be using that bathroom as kids do their business in the upstairs bath, and the masters--me and hubs--do our master biz in the master bath (which is even more horror-show-worthy than that garden of hearts I showed you above. Quick!  Cover your eyes!  Hide your children!)

master bath so awful I don't even know where to start....

Ideas: possilby do a board and batten treatment in the bathroom, and use neutrals with hits of deep brown. Similar to this entryway's vibe.

Yeah, there'll be some pale aqua, 'cause, well, you know.
Cottag-y and less berber carpet/orange woodwork-y, KWIM?
I'm using paint I already have, but would LOOOOOVE to make a sassy shower curtain out of some swoony fabric such as this:

Y'all know I'm a total sucker for big fat flowered fabric.
And I couldn't very well use it when the bathroom berber was being pee'd on was being used by boys.

via From House to Cozy Home, now a private blog and I can't figure out how to contact her!

The bedroom is already painted RL Canvas Natural, and I have the quilt and furniture ready.
My goal is to have both rooms ready for my daughter and her hubs when they come to deliver their baby.
I want them to have a private place to retreat while she labors, as well as a cozy place to rest afterwards.

I love the colors here...and wouldn't it be cute to have the room decorated for the wee one's arrival?
Except we won't know the gender beforehand.
Via Notes from a Cottage Industry.

Sorry to frighten you all this sun-shiney day with my dated decor.
It needed to be done.
I'm now accountable.
Not that posting projects ahead of time works every time.

Fallishness 2011 Pt. 3: The Dining Nook/Kitchen Mini-Reveal

PSSSST...I'm no longer blogging here!

-----------------------------------------------------------------
I teased you yesterday with my new kitchen/nook wall color.
It's a Martha Stewart shade from Home Depot called Brown Alpaca, iffn' you wondered.

The previous color was by Devine Paints called Reflection, and oh how I adore that color.
So much that I painted not only my kitchen,

but my master bedroom (which doesn't look like this anymore),

and living room with it.

Since I don't want to tire of it (and I was beginning to),
I figured one of those rooms needed to be adorned in a warm toasty brown.
It made the most sense to do the kitchen because it opens to my family room
which houses the big brown sectional.

That's the reasoning I used anyway.
Besides I just painted the living room, and I've already picked a different color for the master.
(Hazel Woods by Ralph Lauren, this is not my bathroom, btw)

Anyway, I'd actually painted the kitchen a deep taupe previously.
(this is right after we moved in, hense paint swatches every which where, no covers on the outlets, etc.
Weird faces I can't be responsible for.)

But the shade was too grey-ish.
Don't shoot me, but I can't abide grey or putty at all in my house.
I know that's sacrilege in blogland, but grey is just kinda blah to me.
And WAAAAY too trendy.
No offense to those who love it of course.
Fiddle dee dee.

Here we go:

(doesn't Bogart the Big Black Dog look key-oot?)

I added in chocolate brown fallishness.

My wee hutch fallified.

All the shades of beige, cream, and brown make me swoony in the fall.

Mini plastic punkins spraypainted white in an apothecary jar
and mini cloches sit under another cloche.  LOVE.

Ironstone pitcher from my gramma's collection.  LOVE.

I have a plan for the big back wall behind the table where the huge peg shelf hung,
which entails these two big vintage windows.

So there ya go.
Fallishness and new paint.
A great way to distract one from the gloomy, cold rainy fall here in NE Indiana.

PS.  Sorry for the poor quality photos lately.
I hope to remedy that in the near future.

Fireplace Before and After....with some beadboard and trim thrown in.

-----------------------------------------------------------------

Let's first take a walk down memory lane, shall we?
Here is the family room on inspection day....note lovely orange beams.

Previous owners loved the dark 80's version of country.

Blurry pic, but you get the idea.

One week after moving in...silly kids, but good before shot of the fireplace.

Same day, looking in from the nook.  Cave.

Are ya ready for the AFTER?
.

Ta da!

The room now feels HUGE, airy and bright!

Beadboard ceiling and chandy (gonna put shades on I think).

 Just left of the fireplace...

Looking in from the kitchen nook.

The view from my couch....sigh.

Here's a closeup of the paint treatment I used on the brick.

We'll be putting more of that same trim and a beefy crown molding under the mantel tomorrow.
My hubs worked sooooo hard getting the room put back together before company came for turkey.
I put the last coat of paint on the trim this morning,
and he was still wiring the lights an hour before my folks arrived!

My youngest 4 are pretty darn excited about it too :)

Oh, and I finished my banner, see?
Recognize that shelf?  It was in the first 'before' picture waaaaay up thar.

I'm thrilled with how the familyroom turned out, and can't wait to start decorating the room for Christmas....
